PROTON is on the cusp of holding its first major model launch for the year and it is a big one.

None other than the brand's popular B-segment sports utility vehicle (SUV), the X50 finally gets its first major makeover since the model was first introduced in 2020.

This comes in the form of a bolder design image in addition to its trademark sportiness and a host of updated features.

The new look takes shape from its new wide-stance front grille and bumper, a sportier rear spoiler, quad exhaust tailpipes, dual-tone colour scheme, and a newly designed set of textured alloy wheels.

The vehicle’s interior has also been significantly upgraded to be more premium with soft-touch materials, a floating floor console, luxury-inspired column shifters and 72-colour rhythmic ambient light.

It also features an upgraded Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features, an improved IHU system with a large 14.6-inch screen, and Bahasa Melayu voice recognition for the first time ever.

Breaking down their significance, the 14.6-inch infotainment display that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, now enhanced with voice recognition in Bahasa Melayu.

Pair it with the latest Proton Link 2.0 app and owners get access to remote engine and air-conditioning activation, real-time vehicle status updates, and service appointment scheduling – all accessible via mobile device.

Its ADAS Level 2 comes with the added function of Rear Side Radar System (RSRS), improved Auto Park Assist (APA) system and 360-degree HD Camera and 180-degree undercarriage transparent view. Safety is further backed by the model's 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.

At its core is a new i-GT 1.5 TD engine paired to a returning 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

It is understood that the new engine sports four cylinders opposed to the previous three-cylinder build. The new performance now translates to 133 kW of power and 290 Nm of torque to allow it to hit 0-100 km/h in just 7.6 seconds (0.3 seconds faster than the current model) and a 4.7% boost in fuel efficiency that is said to set a new benchmark for performance and economy in its class.

Available in three variants (Executive, Premium, and Flagship), the 2025 X50 comes in four returning colours of Snow White, Passion Red, Jet Grey, Armour Silver, and the new Teal Bayou Green that was first seen on the S70 sedan.

Pricing of the new X50 have yet to be revealed though we anticpiate that it wouldn't stray too far from the current pricing.

Proton has sold over 134,000 units of X50 since its debut in October 2020 and has been the number one B-segment SUV for five consecutive years.
