MALAYSIANS can officially register and purchase their electric vehicle (EV) specific number plate as of today.

The JPJePlate will cost RM98 a set - comprising of a front and back plate, RFID front window sticker and standard delivery.

Said plate itself is design with a number of unique physical qualities: it is retro-reflective for greater night visibility, comes complete with anti-cloning hologram to reduce potential of theft and fraud, and the integration of Intelligent transport system solutions through RFID technology.

To clarify, there will be two RFID points (one on the front plate with the other on the windscreen) as part of the set.

Implementation of the number plate itself is part of the government's multi-layer effort to expand on digitisation, improve road safety, and to further explore the latest evolution fo the intelligent Vehicle Identification System (VIS).

The initiative applies to all new Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) inclusive of all new EVs. Use of the plate is not mandatory for ZEVs that are already on the road, although the vehicle owner can make booking requests as early as November.

Application process for current ZEV owners interested to make the switch will be announced at a later date.

The current application of the JPJePlate also does not include non-ZEVs.

Booking of the plate on behalf of ZEV customers can be done through the JPJePlate webpage as of today.

Handal Ceria Sdn Bhd has been named the winning vendor of the initiative and is in currently in cooperation with ChargeEV.

According to the Ministry of Transportation the registration of EVs have risen by 150% to 12,850 units in the first half of 2024 - compared to last year's 5,131 within the same period.
