Mazda

Mazda Malaysia has been offering the Mazda 6 Touring since its debut in the Malaysian market. Unsurprisingly, the touring model is the least favored among the majority. Despite this, Mazda Malaysia has never considered cutting this model.

And here we are, the 2024 model year Mazda 6 Touring, after countless updates and facelifts.

Exterior styling

The particular Mazda 6 Touring is the 3rd genaration, facelifted Mazda 6, also obtaining the latest "KODO" design language. Of corse, this Mazda 6 still maintains the fundamental design elements from before. However, the front is distinctly different from the original design: the headlamps are sharper with signature DRLs, and the front grille has larger openings and is painted in high-gloss black for an extra premium feel.

Additionally, the Mazda 6 Touring is sitting on a set of Black Metallic 19-inch alloy wheels, fitted with Bridgestone Turanza T006 tyres. Personally, this 19-inch wheels enhanced the overall premiumness of the car! However, this being a wagon, the rear end might not spark joy to most people though. But if you're a wagon enthusiast, this rear is definitely one of the most beautiful you could possibly imagine.

Interior

It's all a matter of perspective and depends on how you feel about physical buttons, analog gauges, and small infotainment screens. As cars nowadays feature larger screens and fewer physical buttons, the Mazda 6 Touring's interior design might not compete with other "fancier" styled interiors. But like I said, it's all about how you feel about these layouts and styles. For me, I have to admit that the 8-inch screen is quite outdated, but the overall layout is well put together, and all the functions are easy to access with dedicated buttons.

The Mazda 6 Touring are fitted with Burgundy leather upholstery as standard. Personally, the red wine color elevates the spiciness of the car; in a word, I like it. Other than that, the car also comes standard with Bose audio, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, 360º surround view camera and a wireless phone charging pad.

Handling & Comfort

The "Jinba Ittai" philosophy is often mentioned when discussing Mazda. For me, putting "Jinba Ittai" into a real-life perspective means a solid chassis, tight steering feel, a balance between firm and soft suspension setup, and most importantly, braking confidence.

When these factors come together, they create the superb handling performance of the Mazda 6. When you drive it, everything feels so effortless, as if everything is within your control. Whether it's the vehicle's steering, body roll, pitch, or a series of other movements, everything seems so manageable.

Even though it boasts excellent handling performance, it also offers a pleasurable ride in terms of comfort. Its ability to handle road bumps and suppress wind noise is quite impressive. Passengers will hardly feel any discomfort from residual vibrations, movements, or noise while sitting in it.

Aside from top notch hardwere and excellent tuning, the Mazda G-Vectoring Control (GVC) Plus Technology did helps a lot to the overall handling of this Mazda 6.  Put it as simple as possible, the GVC Plus technology uses the brakes to enhance cornering stability.

Engine and transmission

This Mazda 6 Touring uses a 2.5L in-line four cylinder SKYACTIV-G petrol engine, producing 192Hp at 6,000rpm, and 258Nm at 4,000rpm. Based on the data, this engine has a is a high-reving charecteristics, and it certainly is. Even so, this engine still possesses strong low-end torque. Whether in congested traffic conditions or during overtaking, it will not leave you feeling underpowered.

Like the rest of the Mazda cars, it is paired with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission with a lock-up clutch mechanism. As it is one of the "smartest" automatic transmissions, the gear changes are rapid and precise, always ensuring consistent power output in any gear at all times. However, due to the gearing numbers and gear ratios of this transmission, cruising at higher speeds leads to higher RPM for the engine, which also increases fuel consumption.

Verdict

Choosing a Japanese D-segment car in 2024 is an unusual move, while choosing a Japanese D-segment wagon is purely a matter of personal preference. One must have a strong understanding of their own style, be willing to not follow the crowd, and most importantly, appreciate the enjoyment that the car is trying to deliver. Therefore, it is destined to appeal to an extreme minority.
