STARTING this month, selected Michelin motorcycle tyres in Malaysia will be sold without plastic wrappings.

Michelin Malaysia themselves will be rolling out their tyres without plastic wrap to authorized dealers nationwide as of Dec 1, 2024.

The decision follows the company's successful pilot project implemented in Indonesia in 2021, where Michelin aims to expand its efforts to minimize single-use plastics through the elimination of plastic wrap on motorcycle tyres to key markets across Southeast Asia.

It is part of a regional effort that has already resulted in a reduction of an estimated 317,700 kilograms of plastic waste in 2024 by five major markets in Southeast Asia, namely Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

Additionally, the move directly contributes to Michelin’s goal of zero net waste from tyre wraps across its global operations towards sustainable mobility.

Together with the elimination of plastic wrap on its motorcycle tyres, Michelin has re-designed the sticker label, affixed directly to the motorcycle tyre tread, to contain all the necessary tire information for quick and easy identification.

The motorcycle tyres without plastic wrap still come with the same warranty coverage, which covers defects in manufacturing and materials, for 6 years from the date of production.

Tyre patterns that will be involved in the initiative will include:
- Michelin Anakee Street
- Michelin City Extra
- Michelin City Grip
- Michelin City Grip 2
- Michelin City Grip Saver
- Michelin Pilot Moto GP
- Michelin Pilot Street
- Michelin Pilot Street 2
- Michelin Power Shift

“This move is one of the many tangible actions that we at Michelin look forward to, in aligning with our ‘All Sustainable’ vision, aiming to evolve our growth model towards one that takes our planet’s limits into consideration,” said Michelin Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei managing director Prichapakorn Dangrojana.

“In line with our ‘4R’ circular economy approach—‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Renewable’, we aim to deliver the same exceptional performance and quality in our motorcycle tyres that Michelin is known for, while working toward a more sustainable future.

“Our consumers are at the heart of all we do at Michelin Malaysia, and we understand that more discerning eco-consciousness is on the rise. With Malaysia joining the majority of countries with Michelin operations that no longer use plastic wrap for our two-wheel tyres, our consumers now get to contribute to protecting the environment and safeguarding the planet from plastic pollution alongside us,” added Dangrojana.
