A special fast track programme to convert B1 and B2 class motorcycle licences to B Full is expected to commence in October.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is currently in the final phase of introducing said programme along with implementing changes to the system and coordinating the exercise with driving institutions.

The exercise does come with requirements with necessary stipulations to be fulfilled.

Transport minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the individual must at minimum possess a valid and active B1 or B2 class licence for 10 years in a row. This is to ensure that the rider has sufficient level of competency and experience in riding a motorcycle before he or she transitions towards handling a more powerful motorcycle.

The applicant must then be free from any form of blacklist, unpaid summons, business restriction, possessing a record of any serious convictions, or currently has any unresolved issues under Act 333. Similarly he or she must self-declare their general fitness state both physical and mental.

Attending and passing the transition programme is a must as well as adjusting to motorcycles that are of 500cc and above at the driving institute.

This includes undergoing riding practice, possessing driving safety information as well as information on how to ride or operate high powered motorcycles for at least 2 hours.

Lastly, the rider's ability level to handle high-powered motorcycles must be verified by the Qualified Training Officer (QTO) at the driving institute.

Candidates will also be charged a RM160 fee to cover the involved operation cost at the driving institute.

Application of the transition programme is expected to open on Oct 1.

There is no deadline to the special conversion programme and will be carried out until further notice at a later date.

Additionally, Loke also announced that no new application for the B1 class licence will be approved come Oct 1.

This is because the government has decided to combine it into the B Full class licence given the low annual demand of the B1 class licence.

B1 class licence holders can similarly attain a B Full class licence through the conversion process.
